I wasn’t devastated, but I was…. But it was still something I had expected… it only came too soon….
I just stood outside, as I watched her body taking down the aisle…. It wasn’t to the altar….but to the mortuary… I informed, first… my sister about the situation….

And she went to inform Shola’s mum about it…. The woman was dead…. She died 3 days before Sholas’. The family was broken, left with just her sister, and the unreliable dad…
After witnessing her death, I wasn’t going to witness the burial….
I went to her house myself, and to her room… there were loads of pictures of both of us on the walls…. Scattered everywhere… and then a diary… more like an exercise book…. It was titled Jide…
I took it along, as I went…. I got her sister’s number…. And to be honest, that point, I made up my mind to make sure her sister became a very successful woman…. That was the least I could do.
I went back, with Nolly, to S.A the next day.
As I was trying to get myself together, I tried focusing my mind on the contents of the diary….

When we got to South Africa…. Nolly, at first respected my space…. And she tried as much as possible to get me lightened up….
2 weeks after my arrival in S.A….. My parents had buried Shola…. As my sister had informed me.
My life was in shambles… I remembered the diary I had brought along… so I started going through it….
I never knew she was a good artist…. The welcome page said it all….

She busted into tears….. and went inside…. After about 10minutes, came out with keys….
Me: Nolly calm down……

I stood up to run after her….. She entered the car…. I rushed and tried to force my way in the car….
I had no idea what was on her mind… if I did… only If I did at that point.
She drove recklessly….
Me: Baby calm down…..
Nolly: Baby? You’re bleeped up Jide… I hate you…. After everything…. My virginity…. I had an abortion…. Everything for you Jide…. My life is so messed up cos of you…. All because its being re-designed to suit your taste…..
She went to the middle of the rail line… rolled up the windows and locked the doors……
I tried all I could to get the car out of their…. She was on a suicide mission….

She was so determined…. She had stopped crying…. And was praying….
I tried all I could to get her doors opened…. She jammed the doors completely, throwing the keys away….
The train approached…… meter by meter…..
I tried to escape myself…. And then get her out….
After much struggle……. My door broke out….
Looking back, the train had arrived….
I jumped with all my might, the adrenaline that was in me…. Into the bush…
Nolly was gone!

As I had slept late…. She woke up before me….
As my sleep was to be disturb… she kissed me…
Shola: Wake up….
Me: What’s wrong, why’re you up so early?
Shola: Early at 9:30? Come on get up….
Me: Let me get some sleep now? Ahh…. Woman..
She insisted I woke up, at that time….
Shola: Come and continue what you started….
Me: What did I start……. So that was why you woke me….. You see, I still need some sleep if that’s the case….
Shola: Fine…. Do whatever you want….
She pretended like she was angry, and I decided to sleep, in reality….
5 minutes into the new sleep, she poured cold water on me…. I was furious…. But then, it was Shola….
Finally, I woke up…
We got dressed….
Went to the beach, we tried different malls….
The week was simply romantic….
I made sure everything I hadn’t done with her I did….
We went to Abuja, to Obudu…. I spent all I had on her….

I called the doctor on our way to inform him about the current situation
Luckily for us….
He was just about leaving the office….
He didn’t need any plead obviously…
Lagos traffic… was at that particular time, the devil’s agent….
Finally we were at the hospital…. I carried her in my arms…. The last time I did, was when I wanted to make love to her….
Straight into the theatre we went….. As my heart beat continuously…
I ran outside to pay the cab man…. Collected his number….
Like always, I was asked to wait outside…. I went to the balcony to get fresh air….
Few minutes later, I saw the doctor approach me….. I was ready for the worst…. I had marked the date down…. For whatsoever was to happen, I was ready…. As tears rolled down my eyes.

Doctor: She drank too much….
Me: Yes I guess as much… how’s she?
Doctor: Jide, you almost committed murder…..
Me: Ah thank God….. can I see her now?
Doctor: She’s on life support….. Now, it’s her and her support pipe every time…. I’ll see you tomorrow….
I went to the theatre…. Her eyes were closed….. Her body was cold…..
The machines were working, trying their best to save the love of my life….. I got a chair outside…. And sat by her side….
I placed my hands on her chest…. And I could feel her slow heart beat….
What’s the meaning of all this, I thought to myself….
Sitting by her side…. I started to feel cold myself…..
Before I knew it, I vomited about 3 times… on the floor…
I ran outside to the nurse to get me a mop
After much yelling and insults, the whole stuff was cleaned up.
The night was long and silent…..
I checked Shola’s pulse again….
This time, she opened her eyes…..
Shola: Were am I?
I got up….
Me: We’re in the hospital…. You weren’t feeling too well….
Shola: Jide I’m scared….
Me: I’m also scared…. Are you hungry?
Shola: Yes I’m hungry…. What’s all these on me?

I felt, maybe it was a ghost talking, cos she wasn’t acting like anything was wrong with her…. She sounded very normal….
I called the doctor to confirm the situation…. He insisted she stayed till at least tomorrow…. I went out, very late in the night, to see what I can get for her to eat…. After the nurses on duty had described a tight corner iya put….
She ate the little rice I was able to get…. I was so hungry…. But the rate at which she ate….. I couldn’t dare share the food with her….
We gisted, and what was at first sorrowful became a thing of laughter again…. As usual, we argued…. Argued about who couldn’t withstand highness… who was the highest highness, as she always say….
Of course, if Shola didn’t win an argument, then the argument won’t be over…. Talk about lasting for hours…. She’s ready for you….
The thought of me, missing her so dearly….. I wished she was exchanged for Nolly….
At that point, I regretted going to South Africa…. Truly, there’s more to been happy than just dating…..
The kind of love we’ve for each other, is an everlasting one…. That’s why we were able to act weird together…. Most times, you won’t know we were dating…. But she’s ready to let any individual know… so she pulls a lot of stunts in public…..
She slept off, after our gist…. It was about 12 am……
I slept around 1…. I was exhausted also…. And hungry….
We were woken up by the doctor….in the morning….

We went back to the hotel, were we have spent just a night…… even though we paid for a week….. It was all worth it….but very unreasonable.
Right as we got to the hotel room…… it was September 15….. the unforgettable day…. She slumped again…..
I rushed her to the hospital…. Shola was confirmed dead right on arrival…. Right in my hands.

I drove in and got down..

Who has the guts to be shouting in a GRA at 5:23am?
I went to the kitchen to get any available tool…
I got a knife, sharpened it on the floor…..and went outside again….

I was really surprised to still meet the sitting room empty….

By this time, I had already being handcuffed….

I was told there was a murder threat….that I went to threaten Shola’s mum concerning her daughter’s death….
Everyone that knew about her sickness was trying to hide it from her…. I had no idea what she must have told the SARS people, but it was only going to be related….

My mum had no idea how corrupt the police system is in the country…. She knows they collect bribe…. But extra bribe?
SARS are meant for robbery operations, but if well paid, can do anything for you….. Anything means anything…. After all, they’re the police.
It took hours before Shola came…with her mum…..
That day, her mum displayed the highest level of immaturity a man can ever show off.
Her daughter was sick, probably she taught I was responsible….
While I was being bailed out…. I threatened to sue the police…… which I wasn’t even going to dare to do….
Shola already knew about her sickness at this time…..

Leaving the station…..
Shola: Jide, I think I spent my life well….
Me: Shola, don’t talk like that….. Shola please….

I didn’t know when tears started rolling down my eyes…. I cried, the doctor tried to calm me, my eyes turned red and sore…. Somehow, I felt, if I hadn’t been in her life, she wouldn’t have had any problem…. And everything would have been okay for her….
Doctor: Jide, it’s okay….
Me: How long does she have?
Doctor: Let’s say two months…. But please, don’t mention anything to her…. It could kill her even before then.

He escorted me outside, by this time, the reception was full.

We got to the cinema….

We entered…. Being a Monday…. The crowd wasn’t much as I had thought it would have been…
She went to the counter to get Titanic tickets…
Me: Really…. Titanic? A 1997 movie….
Nolly: Well, if you have a better movie…. Mr…
We waited for 30 minutes before the theatre was opened for us….
Being my first time… I had to do as Nolly did…. I followed her pace by pace, inch by inch….
She went to the last sit…. And of course, I followed suite…
For the very first 45 minutes…. My mind wasn’t in the movie….
I was only thinking about how money was going to be made as soon as possible…

Nolly: Why aren’t you concentrating…. Won’t you finish what you started off inside the car….
I came back to my mind…
I kissed her and started smooching….
I realized the whole place was filled up already…. Which was very surprising….
It was FEB 14! I had not a single idea…..
I remembered Nolly telling me I owe her one… of course….
It’s Valentine’s Day….
As we continued smooching,
She sat down on the floor…. Brought out my d--k and started sucking….

She brought out tissue from her bag, cleaned her hands and came and sat on my d--k…..

Soon after, the movie was done and dusted….
We were out of the cinema.
We went home straight… tired… at the same time, very excited….
As soon as we were home, I called the boys…

Me: Na unto that matter… I don reason am….
Tola: Wasere…. Even sef, we dey go the place this weekend…. Guy… na money we dey talk so…
Me: I sabi… make we just see first…
Tola: Se you dey come school tomorrow?
Me: Sure… we go yarn…. Hola Seun abeg… Thanks
All the time, Nolly was listening to my conversation…. Although she was beginning to learn pidgin… she was still very far away….
Nolly: So who were you talking to? Tola?
Me: Yes… how did you guess….
Nolly: I heard you mention Seun…. Or is there another Seun….
Nolly: You look paranoid…. What’s going on….
Me: I might have to go to Johannesburg soon….

Nolly: Johannesburg? Are you joking or what? What’s your business with Johannesburg….?
Me: See, you can’t understand…… it’s between the three of us….
Nolly: Well that’s okay…. It’s up to you….
She was about leaving my presence…. As I tried to grab her hand and drag her to me…
Me: Calm down… where you going?
Nolly: Leave me…. I’m not even interested… if you like, go to Nigeria or Brazil or Turkey… I don’t care.
Me: Nolly, calm down… sit down and let’s talk….
I compelled her to sit…. Which she did….
Me: Look, it was meant to be a surprise, but since you’re getting moody about it….
Nolly: Surprise? Well, if that’s what it is…. Then don’t tell me….*she stood up and smiled at me.*
Me: You see…. Well… so what are we eating… somebody’s hungry.
Nolly: I’ve no idea…. You know where the kitchen is… baby.
This isn’t about anything….
I stood up to the kitchen….. But everything available was all western…
Me: Nolly!!!
Nolly: What’s it now….
Me: I think we should go get food stuffs… Nigerian stuffs.
Nolly: Okay… I’ll be ready in a moment…
She wore a jean trouser with one of my shirts…
We got out….
Nolly: So do you know where to get them?

Me: No…do you?
Nolly: No…. we’ll just find our way.
We patrolled stores around…. And couldn’t even get anything….
But we were lucky as we got to our last stop … the store was owned by a Nigerian…. Although a very small shop…
We got garri…. Vegetables like okro, efo…. We also got enough turkey…
At least stuffs I could easily cook.
On getting home….
We stormed into the kitchen……
And Nolly sat on the cabinet to watch me cook…
I started boiling the water…. Got my garri ready…..
I prepared enough eba for both of us…..
The food was ready in about 45minutes….
At least… Nolly knew how to prepare that, already.
I slept after the meal….
Next day, back in school…. I went straight to the boys.
We were able to fix a time for our journey..
And I was briefed about all we were to do….
We will fix our own games, bet on the higher odds, and make the higher odds win…
It was fairly legal…
Since me and Nolly were leaving as a couple….
There was nothing to hide…
We got home….
