It was a Friday…..it all began in the morning….
That day….. I had promised Nolly we were going to stay home all day….
The morning, she [Shola] called me….
Shola: Jide… I’m on my way home….
Me: You mean my place or what?
Shola: Yes or I can’t come again?
Me: I don’t know…
Shola: I want to see what she looks like….
Me: It’s okay… you can come.
I didn’t know how I was going to inform Nolly about Shola…. I still had to try….
Me: Baby…. Someone is going to be coming… to visit.
Nolly: Okay….. Is there a problem?
Me: No… she’s my ex….we dated before I came to S.A
Nolly: Wow…. Are you telling me this now? You’ve an ex, and she’s coming to visit? You’re not making sense….
Me: Don’t get me wrong…. She knows about us….. And she’s used to coming to chill once in a while, with my sister….
Nolly: Jide, why’re you telling me this now?
Me: there’s really nothing involved Nolly…. Don’t let’s escalate anything.
Nolly: Okay…. When is she coming…. And it doesn’t just feel right….
I went to my room… and tried to wear something better….
In an hour…. There was a loud bang on our gate…. And it was only going to be one person….
I rushed to get the gate…….
As I opened the gate, as about three guys with pistols pushed me …and tried to force their way in…..
In trying to pull in some restrictions…..
I was pushed by two of them…. They were all with guns….
One of them held my trouser, and pointed the gun on my head….
I led them inside the house…
It was only Nolly that was in the parlor….
As she saw the gun, she screamed and started crying….
One went to shut her mouth…..
I really didn’t know what or why they came…. My sister was in her
room….. And I knew she had the noise outside…. Buy proving smart….. She
was inside……and didn’t come out…
In my presence, he slapped Nolly….. And began looking at her seductively….
He forcefully striped her …. As she yelled very loud…
I struggled to fight… and at least, get hold on a gun… to threaten them…
In a bid not to fully recall the experience….

It was a very awful sight to behold…..

She went to kemi’s room….
I followed suite….
Kemi all the way…. Was on earpiece….as usual… with her laptop….

I was only scared of what was going to come aftermath…

She left…. And went back to the parlor….
I didn’t know what to do…. Or how to go about consoling her….
I told her I loved her despite everything.
I went to lock the gate properly, as I myself, was still shaking…
As I locked it…. A knock came on again….
I tried to peep from under the gate…..
I saw ladies shoes…
Shola: You didn’t even allow me knock….
Me: Oh so now, me opening gate early is an issue now?
Shola: Oya sorry… *She hugged me*
Shola: What’s wrong with your face? Or you’ve not taken your bath as usual?
Me: we were robbed…. Minutes ago….
She shouted… what happened? How and where…. Jide… talk to me…
They came into the house… some minutes ago I said….
They raped my girlfriend… Shola….tell me something…. You don’t have anything to do with it isn’t….
Shola: Jide, what’re you talking about? You’ll at least, let me in….
Me: I want you to tell me here, you know nothing about it se?
Shola: Jide WTF! Are you serious now?
As we entered…. Nolly wasn’t in the parlor…
Although I haven’t experienced this before….
I had this feeling Shola wasn’t responsible…
As we were watching TV… I felt it wasn’t right for me to call Nolly into the matter… it was just hours ago….
The horn from outside got me back to my senses… after some deep thoughts…
My parents were around….
Mum: Ah… Shola… iyawo wa…. How are you?
Shola: I’m okay ma….
Me: Welcome sir….
Dad: Well done Jide…
They came in…
Mum: … where’s Kemi?
Me: I don’t know… she should probably be in her room….
Mum: Why’s everywhere scattered…you people sha.
Me: Mum please come with me….
I lead my mum to my room…
As she entered, she saw Nolly lying down hopelessly…
Mum: What is it Jide?
Me: I don’t know how to put this…. Before you came… some guys came to the house with guns….
Mum: Jide! Are you okay? What are you talking about?
Mum: Ah… mogbe….[I’m in trouble]
Me: I don’t know what to do o…. God saved Kemi… but it was planned
mummy… because they just came straight to the point…. How did they even
recognize her?
Mum: Where was Kemi then?
Me: she was in her room throughout…. And I think she couldn’t hear what
was going on… I was really sweating… and praying she doesn’t come out…
Mum: So the next thing to do…. You called Shola? To come and sympathize…. What a son I gave birth to…
Me: No… you don’t understand….
Mum: Understand what? What are you saying? What is Shola doing in the house?
Me: At least… hold on and understand….
Mum: There’s no point… after all…. You brought all these to yourself…
and since you’re proving being a man….you’ll sought it out yourself….
The noise had gotten Nolly woken already…. She watched as my mum walked out of me……..
Nolly: Jide what’s the problem…
Me: It’s nothing… how are you doing anyway?
Nolly: How am I doing? Look at me and tell me how I’m doing….
She stood up from the bed….
I rushed to block her….
Me: Hey chill… where’re you going?
Nolly: WTF is wrong with you?
She tries to… and of course succeeded in pushing me away…
She went to the parlor….
I rushed in….
Nolly: Kemi!!!
That yell… only made Shola stand up from where she was seated….
She went towards Nolly as Nolly looked at her…. With a very surprising look…
Shola: Hello…. Miss…. I’m Shola…. You’re Jide’s new girlfriend……
Nolly: Hello… sorry…do I know you?
Shola: I’m not sure if you’ve heard about me or anything…. Anyway I’m Shola…
Nolly: Oh well… Shola… nice meeting you… Kemi!!! She yelled again….
Kemi didn’t come out…. As Nolly went to her room to get her….
Me: Shola… what’s your problem?
Shola: Leave me…. And let me be…. Before I cast everything…
Me: What do you mean cast everything? Are you okay?
I moved closer to her…. As it was just the two of us in the parlor…
Shortly… Nolly came in with Kemi…
Shola: You didn’t tell me your name….
Nolly: I’m Nolly….
She went to where Shola was…. As both sat down… as close as they could
I could only watch…. As Shola dramatized how silly she was…
It was obvious…. The way she looked at me….
I could only have guessed what had happened as I tried watching TV and pretending to not know what was going on….
TV was getting boring…I went to my room….
I had no idea Nolly was following me….
Nolly: Are you okay?
Me: Yes… what are you guys talking about?
Nolly: Normal girl stuff… what else…
Me: Nolly… I need to tell you some things.
Nolly: Okay….
Me: You see Shola… like I said… she’s my ex-girlfriend…
Nolly: I know…
Me: And she had a baby for me Nolly…
Nolly: Okay you’ve a baby?
Me: I had a baby…with her…
Nolly: So where’s the baby? I can’t find any….
Me: The baby is dead… Nolly why are you talking like this?
Nolly: It’s okay Jide…
Me: No it’s not okay…. What’s on your mind now….
Nolly: I’m seriously okay. But remember I was raped… do you remember that at all?
Me: That happened very recently… it is impossible for it to leave my
memory…. And I would prefer we don’t talk about it. It’s only going to
affect me emotionally.
Nolly: That’s true… we won’t talk about it again… not until we get back to SA
Me: What do you mean? You’re planning on informing your dad?
Nolly: My dad? Why won’t I inform him….*she started crying*
Me: There’s no point…. Babe, I know Shola wasn’t involved in this rape
incident… let’s do this thing slowly…. I’m very confused now.
Nolly: Why’s she here? Don’t you get? By the time the she rots in jail.
Me: Baby…. Have you even taught of us? Our love? What we’ve for each
other…. Shouldn’t I be even engrossed with hatred and irritation for you
now? You’re not even thinking of that. I want us to just concentrate on
us now.
It was quite obvious the lies weren’t going to last for long… and we were only prepared to face the music of all we’ve done…..
Me: Good morning Sir…
Doc: Jide, how’re you doing?
Me: I’m okay sir….
Doc: Can you come down to my office?
Me: Now?
Doc: I know it’s getting late…. But how soon can you make it?
Me: Tomorrow morning sir. Do you want me to come with Shola?
Doc: I would have told you. Anyway…. See you tomorrow.
As we spoke, we slept off…. On each other…. She slept on me.
I had no idea when Shola left the house…. My brain was down emotionally.
The morning came…. A sign of hope…. A future to behold….. The reminder I
set for the doctor’s appointment came as a loud tone, also remembering
us, Jesus was going to come soon…
Me: Baby, get off me…. Good morning…..
She shrugged…
Nolly: Good morning baby….
Me: I need to get to the doctor. It’s an urgent thing.
Nolly: But it’s still 6:30am…. Where are you rushing to?
Me: 6:30? I taught I was very late already…. Anyway, I’m late… there’s traffic and all.
Nolly: Okay, I’m coming with you.
Me: Let’s get ready.
We stood up from the bed….. She tried walking past me to get away from the room…. I tried to block her….. And kissed her……
Nolly: We’re late Jide…. Stop….common….
The thought of her been raped came up in my mind….. Not like I really
wanted to do anything, but she rejected my advances…. I wasn’t
experienced…. I blamed it on that, now.
We got ready…. I went to my mum’s room to inform her about the whole thing….
By 7, we were on the road…..
We got to the doctor hospital around 8:30, there was some crazy traffic, which was of course expected…..
The hospital was still scanty….. We had to wait for the doctor, who didn’t arrive until about 10.
As he walked in, he spotted me…. And ushered me to his office, with him…
We sat in his office…. He wasn’t as of yet balanced, as he came in and went out in very short intervals….
Finally, he had our time….
Doctor: Good morning Jide… sorry, there were a number of patients I needed to attend to…. How are you?
Me: I’m okay sir… Please meet Nolly… Nolly, meet the doctor… I’ve been talking about…
Nolly: Good morning sir…. And nice meeting you….
Doctor: So who is Nolly?
Me: She’s my fiancé…
Doctor: Okay, I understand…. Anyway, Nolly you’ll have to excuse us….. We want to have a man to man talk….
Nolly: Okay….for how long? Anyway, I’ll be outside.
As the doctor heard the door close…..
Doctor: Jide, there’s a problem…. And more so, you’ve not paid for the burial of the baby? But that’s not the case now….
Me: Okay sir…. I’ll pay that before leaving here…
Doctor: Jide……
Me: Yes sir…. *as my heart started pounding* I was making very wild guesses about what was to happen….
Doctor: You see, there’s something about Shola….
Me: Okay….
Doctor: You see, we found out that what killed the baby, wasn’t really
the stress she went through…. There’s more to that…. Shola is a cancer
patient… and as at now…. It is just too late for us to do anything… she
has Myeloma…
Me: Sir…. I’m confused…. She has cancer? She has Myeloma? Which does she have?
Doctor: Calm down Jide… I’ll explain to you…. Myeloma is a type of cancer… it is a cancer of the plasma cells….
Me: How did she get it sir…. Quickly, I tried to get my phone to do some research on it…
Doctor: That’s not the issue now Jide…. Shola isn’t going to survive
this disease…. She’s been enduring it for close to five years…. Her
immune system has fought but the whole thing is sick now…. She’s a
really strong woman….
I didn’t know when tears started rolling down my eyes…. I cried, the
doctor tried to calm me, my eyes turned red and sore…. Somehow, I felt,
if I hadn’t been in her life, she wouldn’t have had any problem…. And
everything would have been okay for her….
Doctor: Jide, it’s okay….
Me: How long does she have?
Doctor: Let’s say two months…. But please, don’t mention anything to her…. It could kill her even before then.
Me: I’ve to let at least, her parents know.
Doctor: Jide, I would be talking to you later….
He escorted me outside, by this time, the reception was full.
Nolly ran to me, as she saw my hands wiping away tears from my face….
Before asking anything, she escorted me out first….
And when we got inside the car….
Me: Shola has cancer. She has two months to live….
Till we got home, Nolly didn’t mention a single world….
I had no clue of what was going through her mind….
In the last months, I was determined to give the best I could ever give…to any woman.
Although, I was to resume in two weeks…. Things had to still work out in my way.
